Last year, the internet lost something very important: its capital “I”. While it may no longer be able to differentiate itself from any other noun, it’s definitely central to our lives. Luckily, there are countless people out there who believe it still deserves its capital “I”. For instance, IoT World 2017 which will be held May 16th-18th at the Santa Clara Convention Centre.
As per its adequately dubbed title, IoT World is host to hundreds, if not thousands of companies who have been innovating in the world of connected devices. This three-day event is focused on learning, discovering, and networking, and, of course, partying! With representatives from the FBI, Google, NASA, Lyft, Microsoft, Facebook, and many more in attendance, this year’s conference is stacked with amazing exhibitioners (ourselves included!). Needless to say, we cannot wait to hear about what all these fascinating companies have been up to. To give you a little peak into who we will be tracking down, here are 12 companies that Globalme is excited to meet at IoT World 2017:
We all had imaginary friends when we were kids; whether you made up a completely fictitious character or gave your favorite plushie a personality. By nature, kids are notorious for their wild imaginations and adorable inclination to talk to anything and everything. Elemental Path took this and asked, “what if toys could actually talk back?” The result: CongiToys. CongiToys are cloud-connected, WiFi enabled smart toys that grow alongside your kid; not physically, but through machine learning. By encouraging learning and play through dialogue, the pastel colored dino-toy listen to questions and requests, and actually responds to them. They also tell stories, teach math and geography, and can help expand a child’s vocabulary all without a screen. Needless to say, we can’t wait to pick the brains of its creators and figure out what more the adorable talking dino can do.
Globalme is a big fan of Garmin through our field testing services; we rely on their technology as a benchmark-to-beat (or at least keep up with) when conducting performance testing for wearable devices. Keep at it, Garmin! However, for the average consumer, Garmin is a reliable go-to for getting us from point-A to point-B. Not only that, but they’re also a company who is driven by innovation and has expanded outside of the navigation sector.
One of their most notable ventures has been their fitness tracking system called Vívo-fitness. They wanted to make fitness and health tracking more appealing for everyone, which is why they’ve made trackers for a whole range of users: kids, beginners, serious athletes, and fashionistas. Vívosmart 3, their brand new tracker, features fitness, stress, and heart rate monitoring as well as notifications for emails, texts, and more! To add, all of their trackers are compatible with Garmin Connect, a platform where you can save, plan, and share your activities. Garmin undoubtedly helps you build a community that pushes you to “beat yesterday.”
Intense exercise often takes the normal wear and tear of your body and translates it to injuries that could take weeks, months, and sometimes even years to recover from. The CEO of Enflux, Doug Hoang, decided to change all this. Doug and his team are dedicated to helping people improve their form and learn about what is causing them pain. Enflux has created an outfit, complete with snug-fitting shirts and pants, lined with sensors to track your movements and show you where your problem areas are. The implications for this technology go beyond exercise. Enflux can be used in many fields including VR/AR, animation, dance, gaming, and more! We’re sure that this company’s technology will saturate all of these avenues in the near future.
Daqri won’t turn you into a superhero, but their mandate to “enhance human capabilities” through augmented reality and holograms well definitely have you feeling a little more like Iron Man. Their three major products – Smart Helmet, Smart Glasses, and Daqri Smart Hud – were created to revolutionize your work and driving experiences. The Smart Helmet allows workers to visualize data about what they are looking at, gauge how safe an environment is through thermal vision, and even allows workers to receive guidance without having to send someone in person.
The Smart Glasses do more or less the same but without the bulk. They’ve also added one very cool feature that allows you to receive guidance from coworkers who see “through your eyes.” To help drivers be more alert, Daqri even developed the Smart Hud, taking all navigation and speedometer information and projecting it onto your windshield so you can keep your eyes on the road at all times. Heads up for this heads-up display tech!
Out with the old, in with the new! iRobot was made popular by their hit cleaning device, the Roomba. But, the company has been constantly innovating and adding new products to their ever-expanding line of cleaning machines. Their newest Roomba, the 880, ditches the traditional rotating brush to collect dust and adopts what they are calling ‘AeroForce technology’. Essentially, it’s two rubber “extractors” that help gather pet hair and dust far more effectively than its bristled counterpart. If that doesn’t sound good, we’re not sure what does. Goodbye pet hair on every surface of the house! Goodbye hard-to-clean nooks and crannies!
Not to mention, they’ve also launched two more products: Braava and Mirra. Braava is a robot mop that will leave your floor spotless while Mirra is an underwater robot that removes debris from pools such as leaves. So, what else could iRobot potentially have up their sleeves? We’re soon to find out!
After recently being acquired by Samsung, we’ve been playing closer attention to what Harman has been up to; especially with their exciting innovations in connected car solutions. When you think of a connected car, you might assume it’s just a cooler version of an infotainment system. But, Harman takes it to a whole other level. They’ve created a system where your car can interact with its environment and helps you stay safe while operating it. Harman engineers have also given their in-car systems the ability to provide real-time alerts about your environment, your car’s servicing needs, as well as the ability to safely access cloud-based media.
To top it all off, they’re even working on security technology to help keep connected cars safe from cyber threats! We’re ready to learn about what the newly acquired company has in store and when we can expect Harman to be the standard in connected car technology.
Life360 is another company out to revolutionize the driving experience in the name of safety. By using a mix of location, communication, and tracking services, this mobile app gets drivers from point-A to point-B while telling you of nearby crime hot-spots and tracking how safe of a driver you are. Life360 is constantly creating safety reports, so if you use your phone it will know! The coolest feature of this technology is its crash detection system called ‘Driver Protect’. If you’re unfortunate enough to get in an accident, the application will initiate a call to the person involved; it even calls emergency services if needed.
To add, Life360 has introduced a new family oriented feature: a private map that utilises geo-location services to keep track of where your loved ones are. As a parent, it’s great because you can keep tabs on your kids. If there ever is a problem, there’s an alert button in which everyone in the family receives a phone call, text message, and email. It’s habit breaking and ahead of a lot of its location-based competitors.
From a digital showroom for Tesla, to a habit breaking, health application for Hubbub, Appstem has become a go-to service for app development. They do everything from product design to development; from QA to technical support. Appstem is focused on providing “better, faster, and more cost effective” services than their competition. They do their research to ensure that every customer gets the best product for their business. We love companies who obsess over the small details, are value driven, and constantly innovate. Appstem is one of those companies. We are eager to hear about where they see app development going in the near future; especially with speech recognition technology on the rise!
Hearing loss is one of those problems that few companies try to find innovative solutions for. But, those who do try to tackle this issue have some pretty creative solutions. Oticon is one of those companies. Their device, “Dynamo”, aims to help people with severe hearing loss. It just-so-happens to be the smallest of its kind and comes in seven colors; making it a sure thing to find a design that fits your personality.
But, we wouldn’t be talking about Oticon if they just made your standard, run of the mill hearing aid, right? Well, the technology also works as a wireless headset that is able to connect to communication and entertainment apps. Whether it’s watching TV, listening to music, or making calls, Dynamo does its best to help amplify the sounds of your environment with the help of a little controller that you could (but don’t have to) wear around your neck.
TomTom is another navigation company that wants to move beyond being a little screen suction-cupped to your windshield. The company has been developing an in-car system (either integrated into the dashboard or on a separate device) that gives its navigation services a little something extra. In addition to providing turn-by-turn navigation, TomTom’s newest technology adds traffic and safety cameras to your vehicle, integrated maps, bluetooth connectivity, weather and traffic updates, and even quick searches for places you may interested in. Heck, they’ll even let an array of cartoon characters from Mr. Burns to Bugs Bunny guide your way! TomTom has also ventured away from their in-car navigation system and implemented their tech into fitness trackers. Now, not only will you be able to listen to music and utilize TomTom’s fitness tracker functionality, you’ll also be able to rest easy knowing you’ll never get lost!
Using IoT technology, Ring is a home security system that ensures you never miss a visitor. With video doorbells, security cameras, and video recording, Ring has created an easy way to manage home security. Using their sensors, you’ll be alerted if there’s movement around your house via a mobile alert. And, their security cameras and audio capabilities allow you to say “Thanks!” to the delivery man as he rings your doorbell. In other words, your home will never be left unattended! The company even has cool accessories to help make the system better and more exhaustive. Including, a wifi signal booster so your devices don’t fall in dead zones; a notification device that fits into any power outlet in your home; and even a solar panel to power your Ring device! Ring has thought of all the hurdles of installing a home security system so that anyone can use it.
Health is complicated. The plethora of applications, trackers, diets and supplements on the market make it dang near impossible to know what works best. Under Armour’s newest venture, HealthBox, aims to be a comprehensive connected fitness tracking system that works alongside you. How? By asking one simple question: How do you feel?
The tracking system includes an app; a wristband fitness tracker to measure sleep, resting heart rate, steps, and workout intensity; a scale to track weight and body fat percentage; and a dedicated heart rate monitor to monitor your heart rate, heart rate zone, and workout intensity. While that may feel like a lot, the seamless system allows you to easily manage your workout and nutrition by asking you how you’re feeling. The best part? Everything is integrated. You won’t have to plug data in twice; once into your FitBit tracker, and another time into your MyFitnessPal. Under Armour isn’t trying to get you ripped. Rather, their mandate is to make you feel better by helping you become healthier.
The internet is an amazing place where connectivity can help a single piece of technology flourish into a system of seamlessly integrated devices with various purposes. IoT World 2017 showcases the best of these technologies and gives people a chance to meet the amazing teams behind it all. If you find yourself there, give us a shout and come visit! See you very soon, sunny California!
