Soo Globalme Localization Engineer
Hello! My name is Sooyung, or Soo for short. Here’s a fun fact for you – I’m one of the original full-timers at Globalme! In fact, I think I was the fifth person to join the Vancouver team, so I’ve had the unique privilege of watching the company grow into the bustling team that it is today.
Although I was born, raised, and lived in Korea for more than 20 years, I’ve always had a passion for exploring new cultures and learning new languages. I spent the first part of my life in Cheongju City, home to the famous Sangdangsanseong Fortress, and got a degree in Media Information and Multimedia Studies. I started learning both English and Japanese at the time, but my love for Japanese soon overthrew my love for English; it’s just such a fun language to learn! I decided to pick up and move to Japan to explore the culture and hone my language skills (much to the dismay of my parents who are still in Korea).
When I first arrived, I did Korean QA testing for an Irish localization company, and then transferred to my friend’s gaming company where I did localization, translation and interpretation for a fun change of pace. I’m known as a bit of a workaholic, but the lifestyle in Japan was overly demanding; after three years, I was itching for change. I definitely didn’t expect to stay in Japan for so long, but it was a fantastic learning experience and prepared me for the work I’d be doing at Globalme (which I didn’t know at the time of course). Plus, I was more than ready to trade in the heat and humidity for a cooler climate; Vancouver was calling my name.
I spent some time getting to know the city and brushing up on my English skills, and eventually found a part-time job on Craigslist for Korean localization testing. Take a guess at who’s posting it was – that’s right, our co-founder, Hanna! The rest, as they say, is history. A few months down the line, I was hired on full-time at Globalme and I’ve been here for around two-and-a-half years since.
One of the things I love about Globalme is Hanna and Emre’s willingness to give everyone on the team new and challenging projects. No one is confined to what their job title entails; you always have opportunities to dip your toes into other exciting ventures as long as you ask for it!
