Walker Globalme Wearable Device Maintenance Specialist
Hello there! My name is Walker, and I am a Wearable Device Maintenance Specialist (sounds pretty neat, doesn’t it?). Born in Toronto but raised in a small town on the southern tip of Vancouver Island called Sooke, I’m most definitely at home on the West Coast. When I was 19, I left the sea, surf, and mountains to explore Montreal; a city brimming with arts and culture and amazing food. I also went to study Materials Engineering at McGill University, and spent my undergraduate degree learning the ins and outs of refining and tailoring the properties of all different kinds of materials: mining and metallurgy, natural fibres (woods), plastics, and more. With Materials Engineering, you can go into research and development in almost every industry – after all, if you make a product with a certain material, you have to know why. Elon Musk without a doubt has a handful of Materials Engineers up his sleeve for his Tesla and SpaceX programs!
After a five-year long foray in Montreal, I returned to Vancouver – it was a rivalry battle between the two coasts, and the west won. I spent a few months working for a solar tech company in North Vancouver before stumbling upon the awesome opportunity that was Globalme. I’ve always been very interested in emerging tech devices, and the project I joined to be a part of involved exactly that! Dabbling in wearable tech is also related to an industry that I’d really like to get into one day – technical textiles. That particular field requires five to ten years of experience however, so I’m excited to be working towards a more long-term goal of mine as well.
My favorite thing about working here? The team and the atmosphere, by far. It’s a wonderful space filled with super-inviting and friendly people. No one shies away from a conversation, everyone gets together for lunches, team presentations, drinks after work, Fancy Fridays, potlucks… the list goes on! Moving forward, I’d love to help Globalme get more wearable devices projects – and to possibly be their front-man in acquiring them.
Here are two truths and one lie about me – take a guess at what is what, and tweet it at us at @Globalmedotnet!
- I have metal in my body (like Wolverine, but not as cool)
- I am a descendant of some of the first English settlers in America
- I’ve swam with polar bears (and lived to tell the tale!)
