Are you interested in the upcoming Localization Events 2016? Quite often, translators and language professionals work from home or far from their colleagues and employers. It is important to stay social in order to expand our network of contacts, keep our skills up-to-date and learn what is happening in the translation and localization business. Either online or in person, there is a wide variety of events, conferences and webinars where we can meet our fellow language professionals.
Industry Fairs & Localization Events 2016
Localization specialized fairs are the largest events in the localization industry. They gather thousands of people, from technology companies to key language vendors, experienced professionals and people new to localization.
LocWorld (http://locworld.com) is the leading conference in the translation, localization and global website management industries. Started in Seattle in 2003, this event is organized three times a year in North America, Europe and Asia. With a focus on networking gatherings, LocWorld also offers highly specialized localization and translation presentations and panel discussions. Although not targeted for freelance language specialists, small and medium language vendors have a chance to obtain first-hand experience and know-how from the main localization players in the industry. Last edition, held in Silicon Valley (California), featured sessions on machine translation development, improved localization processes and future trends, among others.
Upcoming events: LocWorld30 – Tokyo April 2016.
LocWorld31 – Dublin June 2016.
Translation and Localization Associations
In addition to promoting the interests of language companies, industry associations help to create communities and organize industry meetings for language professionals.
GALA: Globalization and Localization Association. This trade association for the language industry holds the GALA Annual Conference, a four-day event that covers sessions from localization management to technology and interpreting. With a similar audience as LocWorld, this large event is also targeted for medium and large-scale language service players.
National and Regional Associations
Local and national language professionals associations are the perfect place to expand our network and learn about trends and issues specific to our country or region.
Formed by the regional member associations across the country, CTTIC often holds conferences or participates in the events organized by its member associations.
ATA: American Translators Association
Similar to its Canadian counterpart, ATA holds conferences and webinars for both members and non-members alike. Ranging a wide variety of topics, ATA has a more legal and academic approach than the industry fairs. Although events are held internationally and it is not possible to attend all of them, ATA also features webinars targeted for language professionals which can help improve our skills on certain highly specialized areas.

STIBC: Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia
Go local! This regional association is a good meeting point for local translators and language professionals. A number of language-specific workshops are organized in Vancouver and Victoria for both members and non-members. The Annual Social Dinner is a good occasion to meet fellow local translators and interpreters. Members also benefit from being included in a directory, which helps to gain exposure to potential clients.
