Meet Fabien Apheceix, Robson Product Manager at Globalme.
What is a Robson Product Manager, you ask? Don’t worry, we’ll get to that. But first, let’s find out how Fabien ended up at Globalme in the first place.
Fabien was born in the South of France. He moved to Paris for college when he was 18 years old, studying finance and business for 5 years.
After working in investment banking between Paris and London for about 9 months, Fabien was awarded a subsidy to launch his own startup project, so he started a company with his friends in Paris.
Fabien took a deep dive into the entrepreneurship scene in Paris, starting two companies of his own before working as a consultant for startups—helping them raise money and formalize business plans and investor strategies.
In 2018, wanting a change of scenery, Fabien sought out an English-speaking city with a great quality of life, which led him to beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia.
Globalme had an Operations Coordinator/Executive Assistant role open, which was a loosely defined role at the time, but Fabien could sense Globalme’s shared entrepreneurial drive and knew it would be a great fit.
Fabien barely had his foot in the door when the Robson Product Manager role opened up—a position he has occupied ever since
A Brief Aside on Robson…
So what is Robson, anyway?
Robson is Globalme’s remote data collection initiative that officially launched in 2019.
The bulk of the project has been developing the Robson mobile app, where participants can earn money for doing simple tasks while contributing to the development of AI technology.
For example, through the app, users are asked to record speech samples in their native language (e.g. “Alexa, play some music,” but in Italian).
This also involves developing the admin platform to manage these projects so that Globalme can process the data and deliver it to our clients so that they can build awesome multi-lingual AI or machine-learning products like voice assistants, wearable devices, or self-driving cars.
Now, back to Fabien!
With the help of the data services team, Fabien’s role is to orchestrate anything and everything related to Robson.
His job is to understand what types of data our clients need, strategize what type of products and processes we need to develop to collect and process that data, and then manage the actual development of the technology.
The role has a bit of everything. Fabien has to wear the hat of designer, QA, salesperson, recruiter, and business planner. And that’s exactly what he wanted when he joined Globalme.
We asked Fabien a few questions about his time at Globalme so far.
What’s your favourite aspect of working at Globalme?
“What sets Globalme apart—or what’s most exciting and challenging—is that we don’t put ourselves behind any barriers. We say yes to everything. Everything is possible. And then we figure it out on the fly.
“We take a can-do attitude into building really cool projects. Sometimes it can be challenging to figure things out, but you get the chance to be super crafty.”
What’s your proudest accomplishment so far?
“Recently, we had a basic speech recording project that would have taken us 4-5 weeks to collect in the past, but with Robson, we were able to do it in 5 days. We’re starting to do things faster and at scale.
“It’s fun when things that used to be challenging are now super fast.”
How has Globalme helped you in your career development so far?
“What I wasn’t as exposed to, and I’ve been able to learn at Globalme, is the client-facing culture that we have. There’s a lot of emphasis on communication with clients. There’s a service culture here.
“There’s the expectation you will go above and beyond while staying super positive. That’s something that will always stay with me.”
What advice do you have for prospective employees?
“You have to come with a can-do attitude: You have to enjoy being challenged. At some point, you will be put in a position where you think something isn’t doable and you have to figure it out on your own. You have to be creative.
“If you enjoy that, it’s a great place. If you are looking for an easy environment with clearly laid out repeatable processes and specific tasks, it’s not the right place.”
Fun and Fabulous Fabien Facts
What’s your number one hobby?
Basketball. I’ve played since I was a kid. I’ve always followed the NBA, and now I’m finally in the right timezone to watch games.
My favourite team has been the Knicks ever since I watched them in the ‘99 final. They had Sprewell and they were a scrappy team. Kind of bad-boyish. As a kid, that was really exciting.
Ever since then, cheering for the Knicks has been a nightmare. But when you’re a true fan, you can’t just decide to change teams.
Where’s your favourite place in the world?
To eat, Singapore. They have the best food. For overall quality of life, it’s definitely Vancouver. For energy and cultural craziness, Paris for sure.
What else should we know about you?
I’m a big podcast listener. Lots of French politics, true crime, and debate podcasts. I like The Press Box for US politics and Bill Simmons’ podcast for sports.
